Sam Drew has been drawing Lumps since 2016 — tubby, wide-grinned characters that started in sketchbooks and kept showing up. In August 2021, he turned 500 of them into unique digital characters on the Ethereum blockchain. Each one hand-drawn. No two alike. There will only ever be 500.

Why 500?
At a time when most digital collections numbered in the thousands, Sam chose 500, Small enough that each character mattered. More like a set of art objects than a production line.

Lumps Before the Blockchain
Lumps have existed since 2016, They started as characters in Sam's sketchbooks, showed up in his illustration work, and gradually became a world of their own. By the time the 500 Inhabitants were created in 2021.
Built by Hand
Every Inhabitant was drawn by Sam, The trait system, 66 individual traits across 8 categories, were mapped out on spreadsheets built with his dad, a self-confessed maths and data nerd. No generative AI. No outsourced illustration. Just a lot of drawing.

ARRIVED - August 2021
Sam uploaded all 500 characters to OpenSea himself, no pre-sales, no waiting list, no hype campaign. Just 500 hand-drawn Inhabitants, put out into the world. They sold out. He'd built the entire trait system with his dad — a spreadsheet and maths obsessive, mapping out every possible combination across 66 traits and 8 categories by hand. Every Inhabitant's unique combination was worked out between the two of them before a single character went live.
THE GATHERING - September 2021
Someone invited Sam to a Twitter Space. People started asking what he was going to do with the project. He had absolutely no idea. A Discord server followed, people joined, and Lumps World stopped being one person's sketchbook project and became something shared.
THE RAPTURE - November 2021
Sam designed a transformation event called the Rapture, holders could send their Inhabitant in, and its original traits would influence two entirely new full-body characters from alternate realities. Two completely different art styles, two separate sets of traits, hundreds of hand-drawn iterations across three body positions. Months of late nights working with a developer to get it right. 500 became a possible 1,500.
CAPSULES · SERIES 1 - 2021
Mystery drops sent to holders every two weeks, part lore, part gift. Each Capsule revealed a new piece of Lumps World's story, written by a friend of Sam's. Some contained physical artworks and prints. Others, digital pieces. You never knew what you'd get.
THE EMPORIUM - February 2022
A dedicated contract for 1/1 custom artworks and collectibles, one-of-a-kind pieces from the world, each completely unique.
CAPSULES · SERIES 2 - 2022
The second series went deeper. The lore expanded, physical rewards continued, and for the first time Lumps World had a voice, audio clips narrated by a friend of Sam's who is a voice actor, giving the Inhabitants a storyteller and a new dimension.
THE WORLD TODAY
What started as 500 digital characters has grown into something physical. Trading cards, collectibles, a Collector's Club, Lumps World keeps expanding beyond the screen. The 500 Inhabitants are the origin. Everything else grew from there.
